Two NHS Students Qualify for HOSA-Future Health Professionals International Leadership Conference

Four North High School students competed at the HOSA-Future Health Professionals State Leadership Conference in Wisconsin Dells earlier this month. The students competed in events such as Medical Math, Medical Reading, Medical Law and Ethics, and Veterinary Science.

HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) is a student-led organization providing students the opportunity to make realistic career choices and seek successful employment in the healthcare field, encourage individual and group achievement, develop an understanding of current healthcare issues, environmental concerns, and survival needs of the community, the nation, and the world, and encourage involvement in local, state and national health care and education projects.

Two of the North students, led by Family and Consumer Science Teacher and North High HOSA Chapter Advisor Amber Miller, qualified for the International Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas, which will be held June 21-24. Sarah Redell qualified in the Medical Reading competition, and Nicholas Yang qualified in Veterinary Science.

During the Medical Reading competition, the students read five different medical books and were tested on the knowledge they retained. In the two-part Veterinary Science competition, a knowledge exam and a skills assessment test how the student would diagnose and treat specific situations.

Academic and Career Planning, or ACP, is a student-driven, adult-supported process in which students create and cultivate their own unique and information-based visions for post-secondary success, obtained through self-exploration, career exploration, and the development of career management and planning skills. Each student is provided with individualized support, appropriate to the student’s needs from school district staff to assist with completing and annually updating an academic and career path.
