South High School art students recently rolled creativity and craftsmanship into one exciting project: custom skateboard designs.

Through a collaborative partnership with Rev Board Shop, located in downtown Sheboygan, the students had the unique opportunity to design and craft their own custom skateboards, blending artistic expression with practical application. The project was led by South High’s art teachers, Brian Sommersberger and Kevin Bazan, who aimed to inspire students by bridging traditional art techniques with modern, youth-focused mediums.

Over several weeks, the students worked through a hands-on process that began with brainstorming and sketching concepts, followed by refining their designs for the skateboard deck. Rev Board Shop provided mentorship and discussion opportunities to bring the students’ visions to life. The students not only learned about the art of deck design but also gained insight into the craftsmanship involved in skateboarding culture.

“This collaboration was an incredible opportunity for our students to see their art take on a functional form,” said Brian Sommersberger. “It’s projects like these that make art education relevant and exciting.”

The final creations are showcased at Rev Board Shop. Store owner Andrew Jakus said," As a 25-year skateboarder myself, it excites me to see what was once a counter-cultural activity being portrayed and represented in such a positive light. It was in my own high school years that an excitement around skateboarding and entrepreneurship flourished. It is for this reason that I believe helping these young artists to explore their potential in different realms is so crucial."

The project not only highlighted the students’ artistic abilities but also underscored the importance of community partnerships in education. By merging art, culture, and craftsmanship, this initiative demonstrated how creativity can be a driving force for collaboration and innovation.
